One of the town's must-see historic sites is the Roman amphitheatre at Fréjus, the only one of its kind in the Var, which bears witness to the town's importance in Roman times. The amphitheatre was an impressive 113 m long and 85 m wide. Built in the 1ᵉʳ century, these arenas could hold up to 12,000 spectators! It has to be said that the shows held in the amphitheatre were very popular at the time: fights with animals, between men, bullfights, the killing of condemned men, etc.
The amphitheatre was listed as a historic monument in 1840. In 1959, the Malpasset dam burst and the violent waters that followed completely cleared the amphitheatre, which until then had been partially buried. Restoration work was undertaken in the 1980s and 2000s to preserve and showcase these Roman remains. During the summer season, this historic site hosts shows and concerts. The Fréjus arenas can be visited from April to September from Tuesday to Sunday (except Mondays and public holidays), and in October they are also closed on Sundays.
